Groningen gas field

Project title:
Groningen gas field

The Groningen gas field, located in the Netherlands, has ceased production on October 1, 2023, in accordance with the planned reduction in gas extraction that began in 2018 due to safety concerns and induced earthquakes.

Geologically, the Groningen gas reservoir is situated in a basin with primarily Rotliegend (permian) sandstone formations. The reservoir itself is contained within these sandstone layers, making it one of the largest natural gas fields in Europe. Over the years, extensive gas extraction from this reservoir had caused subsidence and seismic activity, leading to the decision to shut it down gradually to ensure safety.

This 3D model of gas reservoir is based on Petrel static model by NAM and published by EPOS-NL. The grid cell size was reduced from ca. 100x100x2m to 200x200x10m. Only three properties were selected for this visalisation (temperature, porosity and water saturation).
